Gabriella Cilmi @ Voodoo Vault 5th September 2013

The song which kick started this short and intimate set was Symmetry. It was a pleasure just to be here because I am a massive Gabriella fan and it is amazing to have her back with brand new material. Symmetry was pop with elements of rock. I found this to be infectious and it showed that she went back to her original style which featured on début album Lessons To Be Learned. Don’t Look Back has to be one of my many favourites from the brand new album Cilmi is releasing next month. This was sung at a steady pace and was aided by superb vocals. Don’t Look Back was wonderful and the lyrics were really beautiful. I actually found this to be quite enchanting. It was then onto Not Sorry. This had been perfectly written and it had lyrics which got your full attention. Sweeter In History was offered as a free download and it was a complete cracker. It cements her return to the music industry. Cilmi sailed through this at ease and there were traces of both soul and rock which infused together to create something sublime plus it was aided by Gabriella’s smoky vocals. “It’s boiling. Are you guys boiling” Gabriella then said before jokingly for the lights to be turned onto the audience as no one was boiling. What was up next was Parallel Universe. This was simply superb and Cilmi belted out the vocals. There was a soulful vibe which worked wonders. “We’re going to bring the tempo up a bit. I need to work on my banter don’t I” Cilmi said before mentioning twerking. This was flawless performance Left With Someone Else. It was very infectious with stunning verses and an incredible/ powerful chorus.

It was then onto a song that we hadn’t heard before. Obviously Gabriella was joking when she made that quip. The tune was Sweet About Me possibly her most well known song. Other than being utterly infectious Sweet About Me was a jolly song aided by a killer chorus. After having introduced the band it was then onto Vicious Love which was infact the 1st song that was written for the forthcoming 4th LP The Sting. This track sounded outstanding. I had heard this last year when it was posted on her YouTube. Just hearing it being performed live was quite something. Lyrics were brilliant and contagious as well. It was then onto a power ballad and this being Love Me Cos You Want To. This sombre tune sounded ever so beautiful and is the highlight from her 2nd LP Ten. This number was actually co written with the incredibly talented Miss Ellie Goulding. Cilmi was backed with a keyboard arrangement which made it very entrancing and light. Up next was Highway which was written with Tricky in Paris. In this number Cilmi says that she lost her dreams along the highway. This tune offered plenty of promise. The vocals were faultless and it had been perfectly written. What came after was a take on Blood On The Leaves which was originally sung by Kanye West. I have never heard the original version but Gabriella’s take on it was simply breathtaking. The evening then drew to a close with the title track of the forthcoming album and this being The Sting. This was a superb song which gets addictive the more it progresses. The verses and chorus were both impeccable.
