In The Spotlight: #020 Jess Morgan

Hailing from Norwich is the talented singer- songwriter Jess Morgan. Morgan draws on British and American folk influences, she writes songs that are living and breathing; that tell stories and scream out to be played live.

I have heard a handful of material from Jess and I was really impressed with how amazing it was. If you are a fan of Folk music then you may love this. This is Acoustic Folk at its best and I look forward to witnessing her live. Her vocals are very distinctive plus you can pick up on a Blues/ Roots vibe on every song that she sings.

Jess Morgan has played shows in Norway, Germany and Holland, as well as a three-week tour of the US last winter, have seen Jess become something of a musical troubadour over the past year. Here in the UK, Jess has self-booked tours taking her up and down the country, including supports with folk-pop upcomers Paper Aeroplanes, sister duo First Aid Kit (Wichita Recordings) and trad folk legends Megson amongst others.

Jess self-released her début album, ‘All Swell’ in Bergen, Norway,  to notable acclaim in 2010. Working completely independently, she gained the attention of BBC Radio 2’s Steve Lamacq, Rock ‘n’ Reel Magazine and Acoustic Magazine amongst a myriad of grassroots supporters in the form of smaller press outlets, independent promoters, and other musicians and songwriters (including Megson and Nicky Chinn).

This Spring Morgan will launch a Pledge Music campaign where fans will be able to pledge on the album as well as exclusive goodies. From what I have heard she is someone to keep an eye out for. If you go to Jess’s Soundcloud page (link below) you’ll be able to hear a selection of recordings. I like all those tracks but ones that stood out to me were Pamela and Well Dressed Fellas (which actually reminds me of Ellen and the Escapades).
