This was the 2nd part of The Aviary series at The Social. Supporting Australian quartet Cloud Control were Daughter and Big Deal. Now I was aware of both bands prior to the evening but had never experienced Daughter live. Well I arrived at the venue around 7.45pm made my way downstairs and just stuck at the front till the gig had finished. The voice behind Daughter is Elena Tonra plus there was another guitarist and drummer. Now the style of the music that was sung was folk and the set sounded lovely. She reminded me alot of Laura Marling when I saw her for the first time at The Social in 2008. Elena was very quiet and timid but at the same time sounded incredible vocally. Daughter actually took to the stage at 8.15pm causing everything to over run. They did catch up a little when Big Deal took to the small stage. This duo consisted of KC Underwood and Alice Costelloe. What was to follow was 30 minutes of mellowing folky music. The set was a taster of what to expect from the debut album which will be released in August. I really liked the set it was gentle. KC was on a acoustic guitar while Alice was on a electric one. Both their vocals compliment each other and the songs were fantastic. The band breezed through this set and the Mute Records released debut album can’t come quick enough.
Around 10.10pm the band took to the tiny stage to plenty of applause. They opened up with the current single this being Meditation Song #2 (Why, Oh Why). This song is extremely infectious and I especially like the chorus to this song. The minute instrumental at the beginning was incredible. There was definately a summer vibe to this song. So after plenty of applause it was then into My Fear which I was hearing live for the first time Still this song was extremely uptempo to begin with and the lyrics were very gentle and easy on the ear. “Was anyone here last week” Alister said to the audience before introducing Conrad who was drafted in as Jeremy’s replacement as he was having a baby. The following song was Death Cloud. The harmonising came into play and this was a really powerful song. The Rolling Stone was up next and there was no banter they just played the song straight away. The song was actually gentle and mellowing at the same time. Once the song was over Heidi mentioned that they recently played the Huricane Festival in German and the instruments got soaked. The uptempo That Is What I Said followed on. The harmonising was spot on. From this song you can pick up on a folk vibe. In fact the image of Noah and the Whale sprung to mind. “Thanks to the Communion guys for putting on tonight” Heidi said before they started to play Gold Canary. Again harmonising came into play and there is a folk vibe to this upbeat song which was delivered to perfection. It was then onto the Meditation Song #2 B Side this being Into The Line. In fact the song appeared on the self title EP. This song was amazing and it sounded slightly dark. The penultimate song of the night this being the extremely infectious There’s Nothing In The Water We Can’t Fight. This song was simply amazing and I was completely blown away by it. Heidi’s backing vocals are excellent and the chorus is really mesmerising. “Thanks for coming to our residency” Heidi then said to the audience. The night ended with Ghost Story. There is one line that sums the song up “I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up”. This is not dark song infact it is rather energetic. Conrad did fail to smash the drumsticks into shards but this did not effect what I had witnessed in the slightest.

OVERALL: This night was fantastic. Both Big Deal and Daughter were amazing. I am looking forward to hearing more from them in the future and I am looking forward to getting my hands on the debut album by Big Deal. Even though the set by Cloud Control was the same as the 1st night they kept it fresh by putting This Is What I Said slap bang in the middle plus they added My Fear. I look forward to seeing what they have lined up for the final night of their 4 part residency
