Ones To Watch: Ellen & The Escapades

Ellen Smith, Chris Quick, Jeff Schneider, James Warrender and Andy Calder make up Ellen & The Escapades, you’re favourite new band. OK they aren’t really a new band after they released debut single Without You on Branch Out Records back in 2009. But this is a band that looks set to flourish.

Last year the band won the sought after Emerging Talent Competition which gave them the chance to play at Glastonbury festival. Some of the people they have played with in the past included Paolo Nutini, First Aid Kit, Alessi’s Ark and Stornoway. All of whom are fantastic bands. I first saw them play at the 229 as part of 6Fest. Now 6Fest was put on as 6Music was on the verge of closing and all the tickets had been snapped up within seconds. The line up wasn’t released until that day but Ellen & The Escapades were clearly my highlight. Well the style of the music is Folk meets Pop with a slight dash of Country. Now that combination of genres is perfect and it is no surprise they sold out venues across the UK while promoting debut EP All Of The Times last year.

18th October 2010 was when Ellen & The Escapades unleashed the debut EP All Of The Times. This was released on home grown label Branch Out Records and was the follow up to 2009’s single Without You. When Without You was released it showed that this band was very special. This being down to the fact that the single was housed in a wonderful hand stitched sleeve. When All Of The Times was released last year it appeared three formats. This being download, the other being single and then the last format being 10″ vinyl. The lead vocalist of the band being Ellen Smith and this 4 track is a must have for anyone who likes Folk/ Pop music. Now I really like Ellen’s husky vocals which makes this EP a complete cracker. I found myself completely captivated with this EP from start to end. Opener Preying On Your Mind is sung at a blistering pace which is simply incredible. Also when seeing them live not only you will be captivated but you will be entranced as well. Now I find Folk music to be gentle and soothing.

Now we come to the present day Ellen & The Escapades re released All Of The Times especially for Record Store Day. This released echoed the same as debut single Without You. This being the fact that this release was housed in a hand stitched felt sleeve and it featured other goodies. These goodies being both CD + 10″ of All The Times, All The Times Demo CD, Poster, Plectrum, Sticker, Badge and this lovely bundle was capped off with a hand written note from Ellen thanking the buyer whom purchased the bundle. Only 100 copies were made and these copies were dispatched to 17 different record stores within the UK. With all the hard work/ effort that went into making this it was plain to see that this was something made for the fans who would appreciate and treasure this release

Later on in the year Ellen & The Escapades are playing a string of festivals and these include Lounge On The Farm, Evolution, Bestival and many more. Plus there is another appearence at Glastonbury and this being an 11am start on The Park stage. The best thing about playing at various festivals is probably the fact you are playing to a new audience, and a new audience means there are new fans to win.

So is there a gap in the market for Ellen & The Escapades?? Well I think there is. They definately have music that leaves me wanting to hear more. Plus the prospect of the debut album is mouth watering. The fact both Without You and the Record Store Day bundle of All Of The Times appeared in felt hand stitched sleeve shows how much they appreciate their fans.

They will be a name on everybodys lips in the not so distant future.
