Delta Maid @ The Wheelbarrow 22nd February 2011

25 year old Delta comes from Wavertree in South Liverpool and performed an exeptional set which pulled a big crowd. This was the final night of her 4 weeks residency. Now  I fell in love with this Blues/ Roots music when I saw her at The Bedford last year so I decided to attend both opening and closing nights at this pub. I had seen her play 3 weeks prior and she is incredible live. Even if you hear the music for the first time, give it a second chance and it will grow on you. Delta’s debut album Outside Looking In which is released on Geffen/ Future Records this May. If you didn’t know Future Records is Gary Barlow’s record label. She even opened up for the man himself on his 40th Birthday Bash at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. This was the perfect showcase which featured some tracks which will no doubt feature on the album. Performed were 7 tracks and 2 of them were outstanding cover versions.

Delta launched into Back The Right Horse. This was a heavy song and Delta was backed by a band of musicians. After having heard this song for the first time 3 weeks ago I could appreciate it more. In fact it is really catchy especially the chorus. I cannot wait to hear the studio version of this song. “This is a bit of a relationship song. I wrote this as a form of self therapy in the fact that I was going through a terrible time ” Delta told the audience before singing Broken Branches. She also revealed that she feels good singing this song. Well this song is blues heavy which Delta delivered faultlessly. I quite liked the steady beat to this song. Runnin’ On Empty was next on the night and this song was really beautiful. “I always put a old blues song into the set, I’ve been playing this for quite a while now” Delta told the crowd before playing her own unique take on Eric Bibb’s Don’t Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down. This cover was sung impeccably with Delta stamp of originality on it. It’s as if Delta was made to cover and sing her own blues songs. The Way It Is followed on. “The lyrics of this song has always meant something really important to me” Delta said before playing this song. This take on the Bruce Hornsby song was incredible. I loved this rendition of this special song. “A couple of friends of mine have been very guilty of  aspiring to go out with people who have got loads of money, who are powerful or famous. Suppose it’s just a dream of theirs” Delta said before launching into the light hearted Spend A Little Time. This uptempo song was amazing and there was a country/ blues twang to it. Of My Own ended the night and this will be the forthcoming single. “Feel free to stomp your feet”. Now this was a cracking song which capped off the final night of the Delta Maid residency.
