In The Spotlight: #006 Pocket Satellite

At the moment I am currently addicted to Pocket Satellite. I have listened to the tracks on Myspace and the videos on Youtube on constant repeat. The band were born after a chance meeting at an open mic night, over a hot chocolate, on a quiet Thursday evening in Sheffield. With 5 members from 4 cities, playing 15 instruments, they recorded their first EP – Toy Train, which was inspired by their discovery of an antique glockenspiel. Pocket Satellite consist of  Maya Zosmer, Carl Haag, Richard Falk, Tom Dixon and Ruth Dixon.

I would place the style of music that they sing in the Folk/ Pop genre. The closest band I would compare them to is Slow Club. Currently they have release an album Disappearing Stars and two EPs Photographs and Shells + Toy Train. Toy Train is the current EP and features 6 tracks. I have only heard 4 of them, they are both mellowing and gentle. My favourite track has to be Rocks In Shoes. There is a video for this song which is cleverly put together and is entrancing at the same time.

They have played at a number of prestigious venues such as the Camden Barfly and the Bull and Gate, and just recently headlined the inaugural Lemonade Live unsigned showcase at Bush Hall. They have supported Jenny Owen Youngs at Monto Water Rats, played as main support at The Plug, Sheffield and have played for Drowned in Sound at The Harley in Sheffield. Their music has been featured on BBC 2’s ‘The Cut’ and provided the soundtrack for the Hush Autumn/Winter shoot video. They have also been introduced by Tom Robinson on 6 Music and performed a live session with Iain Hodgson on BBC Radio Sheffield’s Raw Talent show.

Pocket Satellite are currently gearing up for their new EP Paper Aviator at the start of January there are two EP launches one in London on 8th January and the other back home in Sheffield on the 15th January.
