Ones To Watch: Pearl and the Puppets

Currently signed to Universal Republic the future does look extremely bright for Pearl and the Puppets.  The band are from Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire in the West-Central Lowlands of Scotland. Three years ago Pearl (aka Katie Sutherland) used to work in Woolworths and was and was a student (primary school teacher) as well. Her passion for music saw her teach herself how to play guitar at the age of 19. Also Sutherland started writing songs which she uploaded to Myspace and that is how her first record label came across her.

After lots of travelling from Scotland to London Pearl decided to pack up her job at Woolworths when she couldn’t get the time off when she needed. Also she abandoned her degree at Glasgow university. Fast forward to the present Sutherland has asupported the likes of Mika and Elton John in Scotland. Her songs have featured in advertisements such as Vodafone in Australia/ New Zealand(Because I Do), Victoria’s Secret in the U.S and Orange in Romania (Make Me Smile). Because I Do actually features in the 2010 film Tamara Drewe.

Having played at festivals and touring around Scotland Pearl is finally coming down to London. The headline gig at the Monto Water Rats is a mouth waterer. I previously saw her at the Ben & Jerry’s Festival in July and I fell in love with the music straight away. Songs such as Mango Tree and Kisses are superb. Make Me Smile which is also the current single does live up to its expectation and really does make you smile. The style of the music is in the pop genre and once you have heard them once you would want to listen again and again. So I long to hear a full set by Pearl and in a couple of weeks I will have. Once the debut album is released it will be a must buy as all the songs are soothing and it will be an album you would like to put on repeat.

All in all Pearl and the Puppets have something extremely special. They are a band whom I can see will see the fanbase grow when the debut album hits the shops (or maybe when there is a UK tour to support that album). So if you want to see Pearl live this is the perfect time to experience them.
