Ones To Watch: Owl City

The voice behind Owl City is Adam Young. Young started out making music in his parents’ basement in Owatonna, Minnesota, later developing a following through his MySpace page before being signed to Universal Republic.

Before signing to Universal there were two self released albums. The first being Of June the 7 track EP which was released in 2007. Then in 2008 the 12 track Maybe I’m Dreaming was issued. The following year saw the release of Ocean Eyes which was first to be released on Universal. It stormed the US charts by entering #1 on the charts for dance/ electronic albums, digital albums, rock albums and alternative albums. Adam’s success in America hasn’t rubbed off in the UK as of yet. Ocean Eyes entered the albums chart at #47. A UK tour this February may see the album rise in the album charts and it is being released physically on 22nd February.

The debut single was Fireflies that stormed the US charts entering at #1 but it only charted at #50 when released in the UK.

Well I managed to get hold of a copy of Ocean Avenue imported from the US which was on vinyl. I instantly liked the style of music. It is electronic pop the only other act I can compare Owl City to is HelloGoodbye. Once the album hits UK shores it won’t disappoint.

In December Owl City were listed on the coveted BBC sound poll. Unfortunately Adam did not make the top 5 out of the 15 acts nominated. I am looking forward to seeing Owl City at the Electric Ballroom. After hearing Ocean Eyes I tip Adam as a one to watch in 2010.
