Ellie Goulding (Elena Jane Goulding) was born in Hereford on 30th December 1986. At the moment she is hot property and tipped for success after winning the BRIT award for Critics choice and topping the BBC Sound poll for 2010.
Ellie learnt to play guitar and write her own music at the age of 15. She attended the University of Kent which saw Ellie contact Frankmusik via Myspace. This then resulted in her leaving University after 2 years after a gap year was arranged with her tutors and then moved to West London.
It was September 2009 when Ellie signed to Polydor Records and 2010 sees the release of debut album Lights on 1st March and the lead single Starry Eyed being released on 22nd February. The debut single was Under The Sheets which is a catchy up tempo song with a highly infectious chorus. This song was released on independent label Neon Gold Records (which has seen releases by Passion Pit, Yes Giantess, Marina and the Diamonds and plenty more) so Ellie wouldn’t be placed under too much pressure. Under The Sheets peaked at #53 in the Official UK Singles Chart after it was made to download on 15th November 2009.
I have seen Ellie live twice the first being as the opening act for the Little Noise Sessions when Florence and the Machine were headlining and the second being at Shepherd’s Bush Empire supporting BBC Sound winner 2009 Little Boots. Ellie has only had one headline gig and that was at CARGO on 1st December 2009 which was a complete sellout. March 2010 sees Ellie supporting Passion Pit then a month later she embarks on her own headline tour.
Ellie is extremely talented and her music is a joy to behold and she is a worthy winner of the BBC Sound poll. If you go to any gig this year make sure its one of the dates Ellie is headlining. I look forward to seeing her live and hearing more material from Lights.
