#18. Ten Questions With… Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale have to be one of my favourite bands. Since I saw them at the London Astoria I have seen them a further 8 times. This band is brilliant, I have seen so many different formations. Just seeing Noah and the Whale got me falling in love with Slow Club after Rebecca was part of the group when I was at a intimate instore at Archway Library.

Noah and the Whale released debut album Peaceful The World Lays Me Down which features the singles Shape Of My Heart and my song of the summer 5 Years Time. They already have a feast of new material and have been touring with the songs plus adding some old songs into the mix. The next album First Days Of Spring does not dissapoint from the songs that I heard when I saw them at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Even though Laura Marling has gone solo and Rebecca is producing great music with Slow Club, well it does not affect the new material Noah and the Whale have.

Well I was delighted that brothers Charlie and Doug  took some time out to answer the 10 questions:

Q 01. What was your first musical instrument and where did you get it?

A piano we inherited from our grandparents.

Q 02. What was your favourite gig you have headlined or supported at?

Difficult question because gigs can be ‘favourite’ for so many different reasons. Headlining at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire was a surreal wonder. St George’s Church in Brighton was another spectacular venue.

Q 03. If you were to collaborate with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

Phew. Another tricky one. Maybe Will Oldham or Animal Collectove alive. Doing something with Elvis would have been cool though.

Q 04. Favourite song to sing live and why?

We do a new song called ‘My door is always open’ and all four of us are singing to just the guitar by the end. That is a great feeling.

Q 05. Favourite music venue and why?

Probably St George’s Church in Brighton. Really like nowhere else when it is dark and lit up.

Q 06. Where do you get your inspiration from when writing songs?

The smallest things, the biggest things, anything and everything.

Q 07. Describe your music in 3 words?

Experimental folk rock.

Q 08. What tips do you offer to any one wanting to become a singer or start a band?

Get a group of people who have similar taste but who are bloody reliable, and keep plugging away at what you think is really good. And play as many gigs as will have you.

Q 09. Who is your favourite singer or band at the moment?

Animal Collective maybe.

Q 10. Goals for the year?

Release the new album and the film to worldwide critical and commercial acclaim. Haha. It is good though.
