Lucky Soul are a 5 piece band who have been on my radar since the start of this year are a brilliant band. I saw them live in April and I was blown away. The current album The Great Unwanted is one of my favourite albums I have heard. All of the songs are amazing and a second album is on the way especially Add your Light To Mine Baby.
Ali Howard who is the voice behind Lucky Soul was kind enough to take part in the next installment of 10 questions:
Q 01. What was your first musical instrument and where did you get it?
I grew up with my great-grandfather’s piano in the house. It was hopelessly out of tune, but I loved it.
Q 02. What was your favourite gig you have headlined or supported at?
Probably Joe’s Pub in New York, where everything that could go wrong, did, but we managed to get the crowd on our side, and somehow we turned it around. Those gigs are always the best.
Q 03. If you were to collaborate with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
It would have to be Morrissey, although I’d probably be too starstruck and end up hyperventilating.
Q 04. Favourite song to sing live and why?
It’s a new one called ‘Ain’t Nothing Like a Shame (To Bring It All Back Home)’. It has this really amazing rythmn – almost ska – so lots of space for vocals!
Q 05. Favourite music venue and why?
I always love to play The Luminaire. It’s got this lush interior, with a huge glitter ball centre stage, like an old jazz club. Shame it’s in Kilburn!
Q 06. Where do you get your inspiration from when writing songs?
Andrew’s the songwriter, so you’d have to ask him.
Q 07. Describe your music in 3 words?
Classic, lyrical, pop
Q 08. What tips do you offer to any one wanting to become a singer or start a band?
You need a great demo, a great photo and a great press release, all of which you can get with very little budget – just work with other up-and-coming people, who will offer their services for free. And never underestimate the power of an unsolicited demo. If you’re good enough, they’ll call.
Q 09. Who is your favourite singer or band at the moment?
I think the new Yeah Yeah Yeah’s album is fantastic. I can’t stop listening to it and Karen O is a real star.
Q 10. Goals for the year?
We’ve got to get this second record finished and out. It seems to be taking an age, but it’s sounding brilliant so far. There’s light at the end of the tunnel!
