I am very pleased to have Laura Dockrill who is a brilliant poet who I have seen plenty of times in the past. Laura is also known for being Dockers MC. I have previously mentioned her in a post I made for artists that I like.
Well following on from her first book Mistakes In The Background she is set to release the follow up Ugly Shy Girl at the start of June. Well Laura is definately a poet worth checking out. She has some amazing poems and when she performs them most are in character.
Well Laura kindly agreed to take part in this interview of eight questions and here are her answers:
01. How did you get into writing poetry?
I have always written poetry, it is a mixture of loving song lyrics, loving film and loving books. When I was young i read Revolting Rhymes, Colin Mcnaughton, Micheal Rosen and Carol ann duffy.
02. How long have you been writing poetry for?
For as long as I can remember, i went through a big faze when I was 15 and then picked it up again when I was 18 and havent stopped since- fingers crossed.
03. What inspires you when writing poems?
EVERYTHING- people mainly, characters, books, films…i love people, just sitting in cafes, bars etc talking to people, people watching…bit freaky really- but it works.
04. Who is your favourite poet and why?
TOO HARD!!!…erm…Sylvia Plath. She is incredible at metaphors, i love her work, i like “You’re” the best.
05. Describe your poems in three words?
NOT FOR EVERYBODY
06. What poets do you advise people to listen to?
Phhh…Luke Wright, Tim Clare, Mc angel, Kate Tempest, Ross Sutherland, Carol Ann Duffy, John Cooper Clarke, John Hedgely, Phill Jupitus…to name a few
07. Goals for the year?
To be the first poet on Jools Holland
08. What tips do you offer to any budding poets?
WRITE WRITE WRITE LIVE LIVE LIVE READ READ READ TALK TALK TALK LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN…always listen to other peoples work.
