In what I hope will be a regular feature on The Music Reviewer I will be interviewing bands by sending them 10 questions and getting the responses back.
Rachel Watson from Rachel & The Lawn Grower has agreed to take part by answering 10 questions which will be the same for every artist.
Well here is what the website for the band says about Rachel:
“With the voice of an angel and the eyes of a demon Rachel Watson can melt your soul with her singing!”.
Despite little or no ‘previous experience’ Rachel has proved she’s one of the most soulful and moving singers around, mix that with her heartfelt poetic lyrics and you’re in for a treat.
Here are Rachel’s answers to the questions:
Q 01. What was your first musical instrument and where did you get it?
A. I have never played any instruments, it’s all down to Ian and he tells me his first instrument was a Vox bass guitar he got for £5 from his cousins husband.
Q 02. What was your favourite gig you have headlined or supported at?
A. I really enjoyed playing at The Madhouse in Rosliston supporting Vinny Peculiar, he was a lovely guy and played a great set. The people who run the Madhouse are 100% music lovers as are the people who attend so it’s a pleasure to play there.
Q 03. If you were to collaborate with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
A. Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald because they’re just the greatest but I would probably just be too star struck to even open my mouth.
Q 04. Favourite song to sing live and why?
A. ‘Why’ because that’s my favourite(and it shows my voice off nicely :0)!!)
Q 05. Favourite music venue and why?
A. To go to De Montfort hall in Leicester, to play at The Madhouse(appreciation goes a long way)
Q 06. Where do you get your inspiration from when writing songs?
A. Oh crikey, I’m a bit of a language geek so a few words will pop into my head and the rest will all follow on from that.
Q 07. Describe your music in 3 words?
A. Chilled breathy virtuosity :0)(less is more)
Q 08. What tips do you offer to any one wanting to become a singer or start a band?
A. Do it, find someone to help you and remember you’re probably better than you think you are!.
Q 09. Who is your favourite singer or band at the moment?
A. Kings Of Leon, sorry for being predictable.
Q 10. Goals for the year?
A. More recording(hopefully another album?) and to play more live shows, we’re hoping to play in unusual places this year and we’re pleased to be getting involved with Derby hospitals music project as part of Arts To Aid Wellbeing. Oh and getting over my minimal stagefright.
Thankyou Rachel for taking part in this interview
