Slow Club “Yeah So” Album Launch Party @ Met Bar 8th July 2009
Posted by Planet Music on July 10, 2009
I arrived at the Met Bar at 5.30pm. I was extremely early as the evening kicked off at 9pm. So during the time I was waiting I went to the Hard Rock Café Store had a look round. After when I had finished I headed to the entrance of the Met Bar. Slow Club were there as they were sound checking Giving Up On Love. Well I got to meet Charles and Rebecca, I also met Charles’s sister as well. My album finally arrived which was good so I took it along to get signed. To keep me company was Yeah So on my Ipod that I fully listened to. Well this gig which was the album launch party of “Yeah So” took place in the Met Bar which is joined to the hotel Metropolitan. It was a weird place for a gig as this was a posh hotel which was situated in Old Park Lane. The night was for people of the private members club and people that were on the guest list. So I gave my name on reception then made my way into the bar at 8.55pm. Inside the bar Charles and Rebecca were sitting at a table right by the stage. They were joined by their friends.
Charles and Rebecca took the stage at 9.45pm. The set was short and it was over in a flash. Unfortunately I couldn’t take any photos as the use of photography was strictly prohibited. I was right in front of the stage so I had a perfect view. When I Go is the first song on night and it is a beautiful song. This song tells the clear story of two friends that have feelings for one another. This song is a slow song and has some good lyrics “If we’re both not married by twenty-two, Could I be so bold and ask you?” Next up is the fast paced Because We’re Dead. This song which was the bands first ever single is a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end and I love the lyrics. A part of the song I like is when Rebecca sings:
You could cut all the telephone wires,
And hope that nobody does get through,
I might not have the power,
Of telepathy,
But, I’m gonna be contacting you.
This is a strong song and Slow Club put everything into each performance. Also the songs make you smile. I Was Unconscious, It Was A Dream starts off as a slow song and progresses into a powerful song towards the end. This song has some really good lyrics and I like the beat to this song. When they say “You will miss me, When I’m gone” that is when the beat of Rebecca’s drum starts. Next it is Giving Up On Love. I heard this song in sound check and this is one amazing song. It is one of my many favourites off the album. Well this song is a powerful strong song with some really good lyrics. There Is No Good Way To Say I’m Leaving You is mainly sung by Charles and it is a beautiful slow song. Both Charles and Rebecca’s voice compliment one another and make each song brilliant. As much as I love the album I would say hearing the songs live at gigs is better because you get the sense of fun. The following two songs got the best reception on the night. The first being the infectious song It Doesn’t Have To Be Beautiful. This song is extremely catchy and I love the lyrics to this song. This song is fast paced and it is like a rollercoaster ride from start to end. From the very start of the song it gathers pace. Some of the lyrics are beautiful such as this one by Rebecca:
“It’s ugly, it’s ugly and yeah I no,
You never give things enough time to grow,
It’s like driving through the carnival,
It doesn’t always have to be beautiful,
Unless it’s beautiful”
The verses are brilliant well all the lyrics are. Following on is Trophy Room which continues with the fast pace. It is a really good song and has some really good lyrics. The song itself would make a good single. After Trophy Room both Rebecca and Charles grab their guitars and come into the crowd to play Wild Blue Milk. Now I didn’t see much of this as I was at the very front but from what I saw it was amazing. They delivered this song strongly considering they had only just their guitars. After they made their way back to the small stage and it was over. During one of the songs Rebecca says to the crowd who has got the album and I don’t think many people had. Well Rebecca says it is 136 in the charts at the moment.

OVERALL – This was a strange place for a gig. Rebecca mentioned to me that it was the poshest hotel she has been too. It is a shame really as there were people were talking right at the back because it spoils it for people who actually like the music. Well the set by Slow Club was faultless with only 8 songs it was enough to please me. The gig ended at 10.15pm and after it was over I got both Charles and Rebecca to sign my copy of the album. They drew all over the cover by just personalizing it.
